What Does the Beginning of Cancer Feel Like?
Skin cancer occurs when cells in the body begin to grow uncontrollably. While itchy skin can be a symptom of skin cancer, it is typically associated with other tell-tale signs.
Skin Cancer Signs and Symptoms
- A sore that crusts, bleeds, or oozes and will not heal
- Change in mole appearance (such as spreading of the pigment beyond its border)
- Inflamed skin patches
- Moles that change in color, texture, or size
- New skin lesions or growths
- Pink, pearly bumps that easily bleed
- Red spots with rings around them
- Scaly or rough skin patches
What Cancer Can Cause Itchy Skin?
Itching is most prevalent in squamous cell carcinoma or other non-melanoma types of cancer, such as basal cell carcinoma. It is not a common symptom of melanoma, but some people do report signs of itching.
Checking Your Skin for Signs of Cancer
The American Academy of Dermatology Association has created the following guidelines for performing a skin cancer self-exam:
- Asymmetry: Both halves of the spot are not the same
- Border: Poorly defined, scalloped, or irregular border
- Color: Varies from one area to another
- Diameter: Usually larger than a pencil eraser (6mm)
- Evolving: A mole or lesion that changes in size, color, or shape
Is Skin Cancer Itchy?
When tiny nerve endings in the skin become irritated or inflamed, an itchy sensation may occur. While the absence of itchiness does not rule out skin cancer, pain and tenderness are more common symptoms of skin cancers. Regardless of the outward signs, most dermatologists will request a biopsy if they feel skin cancer is present.
